Student Surveys - NSSE

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) Overview

Purpose:
To assess institutional practices and improve UA student experience

Participants:
Randomly selected Freshmen & Seniors were invited to participate if they met the following criteria:
  • Enrolled at the UofA in the preceding Fall semester
  • Degree-seeking
  • Full- or Part-time student
  • Did not have a FERPA hold on their information in the student information system (ISIS)
  • Freshmen, per NSSE instructions, included all students at the freshmen level (less than 30 cumulative credits excluding Advanced Placement credit) whose first enrollment at the University was either the previous Spring, Summer or Fall semester (i.e. for NSSE 2005 this would be Spring 2004, Summer 2004 or Fall 2004). Transfer students were included in the sample as long as they met the above criteria.
  • Seniors, per NSSE instructions, included all students who, in the Fall semester, were within 2-24 hours of graduating but not scheduled to graduate in the Fall semester.
  •
    Notes:
In addition to providing the level of significance for each question where the University of Arkansas's responses were significantly different from either the Benchmark or Doctoral-Extensive comparison groups, NSSE also provided the effect size associated with each of those questions. The effect size is the practical significance of mean differences. The larger the effect size, the more emphasis one should place on that difference. An effect size of 0.8 is considered large; 0.5 considered moderate; and 0.2 is considered small.
